Patient Education Materials

At the present time, there is a lack of multi-lingual materials on BMT for parents and their children. The hospital’s medical interpretation and translation service can assist with locating high-quality resources and providng translations as needed. Cancer treatment and support organizations in other countries may offer their own materials that can be useful for families in the US. Note publication dates for timeliness, and be aware that information on medical procdures and family roles in care may differ greatly between BMT centers and nations. National and regional variations in language may affect usability of certain materials. Also unfortunately some poorly-translated patient materials continue to be published.. The various ethnic-specific donor recuritment organizations can be an excellent resource, as they have multi-lingual staff and provide their own education materials in various languages.

International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organizations (ICCCPO)
Offers materials for parents and children on its website in English and Spanish; many of the ICCCPO member groups worldwide their own resources. See also their downloadable International Annotated Resource List.

Children’s Oncology Group (COG) Family Handbook
Offers in-depth materials for parents on all aspects of cancer treatment, both medical and psychosocial. Downloadable Handbook is available in English, Spanish, and French.

National Marrow Donor Program
Offers some of its web, print, and multi-media materials for adults and children in Spanish, Tagalog , Vietnamese , Korean and Chinese languages, as well as telephonic interpreting service in all languages for callers to its Ofice of Patient Advocacy.

BMT InfoNet
Offers a Spanish version of its handbook Bone Marrow and Blood Stem Cell Transplants.

Mi Medula y Yo
Spanish print version of Me and My Marrow , written for older children, may be requested free from publsiher Fujisawa Healthcare, now Astellas Pharma.

Ben’s Bone Marrow Transplant
A booklet for chidlren ages 6-10, available online from the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group in the UK, in English, Punjabi, Bengali, and Gujarati.
