Families face many other non-medical expenses related to their child’s BMT. It is helpful to know in advance what types of extra costs there may be, to help with budget planning and/or fundraising (see Paying for for BMT for further details). Typical extra expenses include:
- Meals away from home
- Special foods and comfort items for patient
- Phone and communication (Internet, etc.) fees
- Special clothing needs of patient (head coverings, adapting to changes in body size, front-opening tops)
- Pre- and post-BMT outpatient care
- Patient/family living expenses
- Prescription drug costs: co-pays or full amount, duringĀ outpatient phases
- Medical supplies, OTC drugs and comfort items
