Whether any given individual can get a BMT when needed is a health equity issue. Access to transplant is determined both by availability of a donor cell source and the availability of resources to pay for the procedure and essential medical and non-medical care. This section provides an overview of the ethical issues behind problems of BMT access. These include data on the demographics of the unrelated donor pool and of recipients of unrelated BMTs; understanding basics of genomics and how they relate to root causes of the present disparities; and tips for BMT advocacy work. This section is intended for both patient families and policy makers .
